About Asahien
"Tea" has a history of about 1,300 years in Japan, and has long been a favorite drink of the Japanese people.
While the tradition of "chanoyu" established hundreds of years ago is still passed down today, it has been integrated into the daily life of this country for a much longer time.
Asahien is a long-established specialty store specializing in Kawane tea, which has been in business for 70 years. The Kawane area has been producing Japanese tea since the Edo period. We proudly offer the highest quality teas in this area, which has been passed down from generation to generation for over 400 years.
We provide healthy daily life with high quality Japanese tea produced in the Kawane environment.
About Kawane, Shizuoka
About 900 years ago, along with Zen Buddhism, tea was introduced to Japan for its longevity benefits. Kawane in Shizuoka is surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters high with fresh water flowing through the area.
It is said the region is blessed with a great environment for producing thin, soft tea leaves that contain more flavor with less astringency and bitterness. Thanks to the region’s geographic advantage in which pests are less active due to its high elevation and cooler climate, there are many organic and pesticide-free tea farms in the area. The farmers have been fertilizing the soil with traditional cultivation methods that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Kawane tea was already recognized as a brand in the Edo period and was used as the region’s annual tribute (usually rice) during the reign of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
